Yandex Direct is a Yandex service that helps companies promote products and services online. Through it, ads show in Yandex search and on search partner sites, as well as on Yandex’s services and the placements of the Yandex Advertising Network’s partners. The advertiser chooses what to promote, where and to whom to show ads, sets budget limits, and pays for the result — clicks or conversions.
Below: how Direct works, what money gets charged for, how it differs from Yandex Business, and what to prepare before your first campaign.
What Yandex Direct is in plain terms
Direct is an advertising system. You create ads and describe the situations in which to show them. The system then decides, at every impression, whose ad a particular person will see. «Direct» in conversation is short for Yandex Direct.
At the heart of Direct is PPC (paid search) advertising: ads that match what a person is searching for or interested in. More on what PPC advertising is and what types it comes in in a separate article. Here the focus is only on Direct: how it’s built and how to use it.
What Yandex Direct is for
Direct’s help documentation provides separate launch scenarios for different tasks: promoting a site, advertising a business without a site, promoting products, including on a marketplace, and promoting a Telegram channel. Mobile apps have their own strategies.
In our view, Direct is a good fit when:
- people are already searching for your product or service on Yandex;
- you need inquiries from the site — leads, orders, sign-ups — and you’re ready to measure them;
- you need to test demand for a new offer on a limited budget;
- you need to show up to people with matching interests, even if they aren’t searching for anything right now.
If there’s no demand, Direct won’t create it. That’s a matter of the product and the offer, not campaign settings.
Where Direct’s ads show
The set of placements depends on the tool you use to launch the campaign and on its settings. The main placements as of October 10, 2026:
| Placement | What it is | How the impression is selected |
|---|---|---|
| Yandex search and search partner sites | Ad blocks on the results page: premium impressions above the results, others — in the middle or at the bottom of the page | By the person’s query: through keyword phrases or autotargeting |
| Yandex Advertising Network (YAN) | Yandex’s services and partner placements: sites and apps | By the placement’s topic, or by the user’s interests and behavior |
| Yandex Maps | A placement available in Campaign Builder, Unified Performance Campaign and Easy Start | By campaign settings |
| Messengers: Telegram and MAX | Advertising in channels, launched through a Unified Performance Campaign | Channels are picked by ad content, accounting for the selected regions |
| Outdoor advertising | Screens on city streets: shop windows, taxi roofs, standalone structures. A beta tool, not available in every city | By campaign settings |
Yandex keeps expanding the set of placements, and new formats often start out in beta. Check the current list in Direct’s help documentation before launch.
How Yandex Direct works
What an ad campaign consists of
A Direct campaign has three levels. Here’s how they’re described in the help documentation using a Unified Performance Campaign as an example:
- Campaign — general settings: placements, strategy, timing and schedule.
- Ad group — who to show to: geography, autotargeting, topical words, interests and habits, audience segments.
- Ad — what the person sees: ad type, texts, images, video.
What the system uses to decide whether to show an ad is called the impression conditions. The main ones are:
- Keyword phrases — words and phrases that determine who an ad is shown to. In search, an ad can show for a query that contains the whole phrase or refines it: with typos, synonyms, rephrasings. In the networks, a keyword phrase sets the placement’s topic and the user’s interests.
- Autotargeting — showing without keyword phrases. The system analyzes the ad and the page it leads to, and decides for itself whether it fits the query, the person’s interests, or the placement’s topic.
- Audiences — interests, habits and audience segments set at the group level. If this approach suits you better, the breakdown on how advertising by interest differs from advertising by query will be useful.
What exactly you’re promoting — a site, products, a Telegram channel, or a business without a site — is chosen when creating the campaign.
Campaign types
Direct has several tools for launching campaigns. Per the help documentation as of October 10, 2026:
| Tool | What it is |
|---|---|
| Easy start | Direct automatically sets up the campaign based on the business’s specifics. A link to the site, or a questionnaire about the business if there’s no site, is enough |
| Campaign Builder | A simple, fast way to place ads. Gives more control over the launch than Easy start, and suggests texts and images |
| Unified Performance Campaign | A tool for specialists: search, Maps, YAN and messengers in one campaign with flexible settings |
| Reach Advertising, Search Context Banner | Tools in the professional Direct Pro interface |
Yandex changes the names and composition of these tools from time to time, so check the help documentation on the launch date.
Interface modes
Direct has two interfaces. The basic one, «Direct,» is built for beginners and entrepreneurs: it has Easy start and Campaign Builder. «Direct Pro» is the advanced interface, also known as expert mode, for professional marketers experienced in running campaigns. In it, you can place ads on all available placements and use professional tools.
An important detail: once you switch from Direct to Direct Pro, you can’t go back to the basic interface. It’s better to decide on the switch in advance, not just to take a look.
The auction: why some ads rank above others
The cost of a click in Direct isn’t fixed: it’s determined by bidding between advertisers. A bid is the amount the advertiser is ready to pay for a click. At every impression, ads are ranked by a combination of the bid, a quality factor, and the predicted CTR, that is, the ad’s predicted click-through rate.
So a high bid alone doesn’t guarantee a placement. Position depends on the competitors in each specific auction, and no one can assign it in advance. The price charged per click is calculated under VCG auction rules in search, and under GSP auction rules in the networks. You don’t need to understand these formulas to get started.
Moderation and labeling
All ads in Direct go through moderation — a check against the requirements for ad materials. Until an ad has fully passed moderation, it won’t show. Promotion is restricted or prohibited for some products and services — the list is in the help documentation.
Labeling is a requirement of the advertising law. Internet advertising must carry an «advertising» label, identify the advertiser, and include an identifier assigned by an ad data operator. Information about such advertising goes into the Unified Register of Internet Advertising — a record-keeping system built by Roskomnadzor. In Direct, Yandex itself performs part of this work as the ad data operator.
What the advertiser pays for
In Direct, you pay for a result — clicks or conversions. The amount spent depends on the chosen bids, the strategy and the budget limits.
A strategy is a set of settings that solves the campaign’s task: bringing traffic to the site, getting more target actions, or optimizing profitability or profit. Bids can be managed in two ways:
- manually — you set the bid for each impression condition yourself and, if needed, limit the weekly budget;
- automatically — you define the result the strategy should aim for, and the system picks the bids.
As of the help documentation on October 10, 2026, the strategies listed are «Maximum clicks,» «Maximum clicks with manual bids,» «Maximum conversions» and «Maximum profit,» plus separate optimization strategies for apps.
Pay-per-conversion is an option where you pay for every priority action on the site, rather than per click. Hence the common question about CPA: that’s the price of a target action, which Direct calls the conversion price. You can see it in Report Wizard alongside conversions. The «Maximum conversions» strategy requires a Yandex Metrica tracking tag with goals set up.
The ad budget is deposited to an account in Direct. For individuals in Russia, the help documentation names payment by bank card, via the Fast Payment System (SBP), by bank invoice, cash via a payment code, and through YooMoney. Under the advertising law, Direct requests the payer’s details, including their tax ID (INN), and passes them to the internet advertising register.
If a campaign is short on funds, deferred payment with an overdraft — a threshold up to which campaigns keep running on credit — can help. Yandex doesn’t offer deferred payment to everyone, and grants it at its own discretion; it doesn’t offer it to agencies or their clients.
There’s no single figure for what advertising in Direct costs. The click price is set by the auction, and the final spend depends on bids, strategy and budget. For search campaigns there’s a Budget Forecast — a service that helps estimate approximate spend for the chosen regions and keyword phrases, along with an approximate click cost. It’s a reference point, not a promise: actual spend depends on the auction.
Direct and Yandex Metrica: how to measure the result
A click only shows that a person went to the site. To understand what they did there, Direct is linked to Yandex Metrica — a web analytics system. The Metrica tracking tag is code placed on the site’s pages. With it, you can study visitor behavior, set goals and track conversions.
- A goal is a visitor action the site owner is interested in: visiting a specific page, clicking a button, paying for an order, and so on.
- Conversion in Metrica is the ratio of target visits to total visits. Direct’s help documentation also calls conversions the visits themselves in which goals were completed. So in reports, check which one you’re looking at: a share or a count.
Goals aren’t only for reports. Strategies that optimize a campaign for conversions rely on them, and such a strategy can’t be connected without a Metrica tracking tag.
Campaign statistics are viewed in Report Wizard — a tool for analyzing campaign performance and detailed metrics of how they’re running. It has a library of ready-made reports for different tasks. A separate «Search queries» report helps analyze the queries ads were shown for.
So analytics can tell traffic sources apart, URL parameters — also called UTM tags — are added to ad links. Web analytics systems use them to get extra information about visits.
Our recommendation: set up Metrica goals before launching ads. That way the first days’ data is usable for decisions right away, instead of being lost while measurement is still being finished.
Yandex Direct and Yandex Business: what’s the difference
Both services belong to Yandex, and you can launch advertising in either. But they’re built differently.
Yandex Business is a service for entrepreneurs that helps a company appear in Yandex Maps and Search and launch advertising online. Adding company information to it is free. Advertising there is connected as an Ad Subscription, and Priority Placement helps you stand out in Maps.
| Yandex Direct | Yandex Business: Ad Subscription | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A service for promoting products and services online | A simple tool for entrepreneurs that automatically launches advertising with no complex setup |
| Who creates ads and manages impressions | The advertiser: placements, strategy, impression conditions, ads. In Easy start, Direct does the setup | Ads are created automatically from company materials and information. Yandex Business decides where to buy advertising |
| What the advertiser sets | Bids or a strategy goal, budget limits, audiences, schedule | Budget, campaign duration, branches and placement format |
| Where it shows | Search, YAN, Maps, messengers, outdoor screens — depending on the tool | Search, Yandex Maps, Navigator and external placements |
| What’s promoted | A site, products, a Telegram channel, an app, a business without a site | The company: ads are built on information about it |
| Who it suits (our assessment) | Those who want to manage campaigns and are ready to get into the settings and analytics — themselves or with a contractor | A local business for whom a simple launch matters more than control over every setting |
The services don’t rule each other out: a company from Yandex Business can be added to a Direct campaign. The choice here isn’t about «what’s better,» but about how much control you need and who’ll be using it.
How to get started with Yandex Direct
This isn’t an account walkthrough, but a list of what’s worth preparing before your first campaign.
- Your advertising goal and your Metrica goals. Decide what action counts as a result: an inquiry, an order, a sign-up. Install the Metrica tracking tag on the site and set up goals.
- Demand. Before spending the budget, find out how to check whether people search for your product on Yandex, and what words they use.
- Landing page. The page the ad leads to should answer the query. If there’s no site, Direct has a launch option for a business without one: Yandex’s neural network creates a landing page with product information and contacts.
- Test budget. Decide on the amount you’re ready to spend on testing the hypothesis, and check it against the Budget Forecast.
- Account and workspace. Direct’s account is at direct.yandex.ru. Decide in advance whether you need the basic interface or Direct Pro: there’s no switching back from Pro. For labeling, fill in the advertiser’s details in the account.
- Training. Yandex has free courses: «Yandex on Direct: basics» — for entrepreneurs and beginner specialists, and «Yandex on Direct: advanced» — for those already working with Direct.
Bringing in a contractor makes sense if you don’t have time to get into the account and regularly review the data. Or if analytics needs to be set up before launch, and there are many campaigns and lines of business that need a clear structure. In that case it’s useful to understand in advance what working with a contractor on Direct advertising looks like: what it includes and what’s agreed with you.
FAQ
Can you advertise in Direct without a site?
Yes. Campaign Builder has a scenario for a business without a site: a couple of sentences about your business is enough. Yandex’s neural network will create a landing page with product information and contacts, and you can attach a company from Yandex Business to it. You can also promote a Telegram channel through Direct.
Is there a minimum budget in Yandex Direct?
The minimum payment amount is listed in Direct’s payment help documentation — check it as of your top-up date. It’s a threshold for funding the account, not a recommended campaign budget. How much to spend is up to you: budget limits are set in the strategy, for example a weekly budget. Whether that’s enough for conclusions depends on the competition in your line of business.
How is Direct connected to YAN?
YAN is one of Direct’s ad placements: a system for placing ads on Yandex’s services and partner placements. A single campaign can run in both search and YAN.
Who labels advertising launched through Direct?
Yandex performs the main actions as the ad data operator: issuing a token for every creative before placement and adding the «Advertising» label. The advertiser fills in their own details in the account: legal form, name, tax ID (INN) and phone number. If an agency runs the ads, it specifies the end advertiser’s details and submits a report to the register after impressions.
Can Direct show ads by interest rather than by query?
Yes. In the networks, autotargeting primarily relies on the user’s known interests. YAN’s placements are also chosen through behavioral targeting — by the person’s interests and behavior online. In a Unified Performance Campaign, interests, habits and audience segments can be set at the group level.
